20 Hexagons and 12 Pentagons
To construct the geometric net of 20
hexagons and 12 pentagons, print out
the following six pages either A4 or A3
size. You will need to form a team of
six and co-operate together to
construct and colour in the various
parts of the geometric net.
"Can you read the following quote out to
the class please Striker Schmichaels"?
"History buffs and flag wavers, if you study the
records, you will find that when the peasants
and working class people had leisure time,
they played the game which they learned as
children. The English, Irish and Scottish
miners, for example, played the game they
knew, where ever in the world that fate took
them. Yes, football was indeed played on the
Central Victorian Gold Fields, Australia in the
1850's. As it still is today". (Past President of
the Castlemaine Soccer Club WB.)

"Thank you for reading that out to the class
Striker Schmichaels. One of the main activities
at the PolySchool camp
(search the PolyLibray
index to find out about the PolyCamp)
will be to
take part in a re-enactment of a football game
from the 1850's".
Each person colours in their sheet.
When finished cut around the outside
thick black lines of the net. Then fold
all the dotted lines backward. Glue up
the tabs to form up the shape.
There should now be six partially
formed parts of the geometric shape.
Join each glued up form to the central
piece of the geometric net (page 2).
The correct position of each of the
forms is shown by the appropriate
black triangles, so glue like to like. Do
one shape at a time and glue all the
tabs to form the new partial completed
geometric shape. All five pieces need
to be attached to the central part to
complete the project.

"To help make the event a success the
organisers have requested that we bring along
our own geometric net of 20 hexagons and 12
pentagons to play with".
This is what the geometric net looks like.
To get a feel of the era the local
community has provided snippets and
stories of children,
Gentle Annie,
Rocky, Mona, Long and their teacher
the
"Great Ico", who lived in the area in
the 1850's and loved to play football.
(look them up in the PolyLibrary index).
Rumour has it that the original drawing
of this geometric net was done by the
"Great Ico".The gianormous measuring
machine?The precise Ico who worked
through problems and measured
things which needed to be measured.
Always marking out lines on the grass
each week. Constantly producing
charts and drawings showing players
positions and tactics that would be
used during the game.
